The Arcade Lives On Down Under

by witchfinder @ 24 Jun. 2008 - 16:10:24

The classic Amusement Arcade full of videogames is very much a dying breed here in the UK, if not a totally dead one!  The closest we seem to have is the plethora of dancing and driving games at the local bowling alley. However on my recent trip to New Zealand I found several throwbacks to the Arcades of the early 90's, the best of the bunch being just before I left the country, at Christchurch airport...

Arcade
A bit too bright and shiny, but it still has that classic Arcade feel to it.

Namco multi-game cabinet, clearly running some version of MAME

RayStorm
RayStorm (AKA Layer Section 2) was only 20 cents per credit - that's 8p in English money!

Sega Rally looking great at 13 years of age

A nice NEO-GEO cabinet featuring Metal Slug

Yeah, we seem to have a the odd arcade joint with some old classics at airports here in Australia as well. Makes for a nice distraction when waiting for a flight.

It certainly helped me pass the time! We used to have arcades in most UK airports that occasionally had some older games, but they seem to have shut them all down now... :(
